Mastheads and Target Audience

I have chosen three mastheads which all differ to one another, the magazines themselves represent different genres of music.

This magazine is part of the classical music genre, it is a devotion to classical music focusing on recordings. This type of genre reaches a specific target audience which is associated with an elder audience as well as those who have a high passion for classical music. I personally would associate classical music with those who are upper class. This masthead is very basic and does not challenge a reader, its design is very blocky and bold therefore making it striking on the eye, as well as this the actual title itself relates to classical music and conveys the magazines purpose. Finally a music artist that relates to this genre of music would be someone like Andre Rieu

New Musical Express (NME) is one of the UK's best selling music magazine. As a magazine it represents the Rock/Indie genre, its masthead design is iconic and can be easily recognised on magazine shelves.  The target audience for this magazine would be again quite specific, its genre represents young adults who may dress in a rocky and indie way who also have an interest in the music genre as well. The design of NME's masthead is so basic, it doesn't convey much through its masthead so therefore if someone was totally oblivious to NME they wouldn't know what the actual genre was for the magazine through the title. Although, I do think that this masthead is very striking and bold because of its use of the colour white and large, chunky, block lettering. Finally a band relating the genre of NME would be a rocky and not well known type of band such as The Twilight Sad.

This magazine aims towards a younger target audience market such as young girls and pre-teens, its masthead design is extremely girly and does convey its target audience, the font for this magazine is again very striking and bold just like my other two examples. However i think the element of the 'S' being swirly adds a girly essence to the magazine, also the use of the colour pink instantly portrays a target audience because of this ideology of young girls liking the colour pink. This genre would feature artists that young girls are interested in such as One Direction.
